Though the Somali Transitional government is trying to bring some measure of stability to the war torn country, it should not do so on the backs of its precious children, and certainly not with the help of the American taxpayer.

Senator Richard J. Durban, Democrat of Illinois, addresses the United Nations Security Council on June 16, 2010 regarding the violation of the Child Soldier Prevention provision by American assistance to the Somali Transitional Federal Government (click the quote above to view full video). In his powerful address, he uses imagery to drive home his humanitarian efforts; a photograph of two Somali soldiers of the ages of twelve and fifteen. The photograph (shown below) was taken by Ed Ou, photojournalist who recently became one of O’Born Contemporary’s signature artists. Check out more of Ed’s series Children of Men on his site here, and look forward to seeing more of Ed’s work at O’Born in the future.

Photojournalist and friend of O’Born Contemporary Kitra Cahana just announced a continuation of her collaborative project with Chris Urquhart called Welcome to Rainbowland (first place winner in World Press Photo 2010). Kitra, who exhibited in O’Born Contemporary’s Contact 2010 exhibition Subjective, and Chris will be living and raveling with modern American nomads; everyone from street performers to teenage runaways to freak show artists!

Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Check out the images on Kitra’s and World Press Photo’s sites; they are currently funding their own way, and are encouraging community-based funding to finish the project. Go here to check out a short documentary and even help them fund Welcome To Rainbowland!
