intervention statement

Pictures

O'Born Contemporary is pleased to present Mark Peckmezian's first solo exhibition, Pictures. Despite the artist's singular figural muse, the conceptual sights of this latest body of work are ultimately trained on a reification of now defunct pictorial modes, aesthetic strategies, and stylistic approaches to photography. At one time thoroughly acceptable and highly traditional, "photography as mere photography" now strikes us as completely radical. The anti-tipping point Peckmezian orchestrates by focusing on a token subject refutes the current trend in photography and enunciates a radical simplicity, pushing his thesis into the realm of the absurd. Pictures functions on a variety of intellectual levels, performing its role as an exhibition equally for the uninitiated and the weathered.
